A study led by researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) reports that nicotine exposure remains the same, while exposure to specific carcinogens and toxicants is reduced, among smokers who switch from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. The new research has been published online ahead of print in the journal Nicotine Tobacco Research.

Lead author of the study is Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PharmD, is Assistant Professor of Oncology in the Department of Health Behavior at Roswell Park
“Our findings raise some concerns about the safety of additives used in e-cigarettes,” Goniewicz said.
In the study, Goniewicz and his colleagues exposed airway cells to vapor generated from e-cigarettes. The researchers evaluated e-cigs filled with different flavors, including tobacco, pina colada, menthol, coffee and strawberry. They also tested the vapor generated from different battery output voltages. Users can increase the voltage of e-cigarettes to get a bigger hit of nicotine when they inhale. Though there are some concerns, vaping seems safer than smoking.
Maciej speaks about how their research proves smokers converting to e-cigarettes have a chance to lower their risk of expossure to Cancer producing carcinogens found in traditional tobacco. Their findings reported reduced levels of toxins when compared to the levels produced from smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Maciej Goniewicz and his team of researchers have conducted this study to show proof to the general public that if smoker’s were to completely quit smoking and convert to vaping in the interim, there would be significant reduction in the risk associated with the ex-smoker being exposed to cancer causing chemicals and carcinogens. “This study suggests that smokers who completely switch to e-cigarettes and stop smoking tobacco cigarettes may significantly reduce their exposure to many cancer-causing chemicals.” says Maciej
“We actually expected this finding,” Goniewicz said. “We have previously showed that increasing voltage of an e-cigarette leads to higher temperature of the device. That may cause degradation of some ingredients in e-cigarettes and release of significant amounts of toxic compounds.”
Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration extended its authority over tobacco products to include e-cigarettes. The agency banned sales to minors, and ordered all manufacturers to submit their products for safety review within two years.
However, the FDA did not ban the use of flavorings in e-cigarettes as it has done with traditional tobacco cigarettes, a move the American Lung Association is pushing.

Despite the toxicity of e-cigarette vapors, Maciej Goniewicz added the following comments which suggest that tobacco cigarettes are even more toxic.
“In our study, we also exposed cells to tobacco smoke and found that tobacco smoke was much more toxic than e-cigarettes,”
“I believe smokers who have switched to e-cigarettes will find more proof that e-cigarettes are safer products compared to tobacco cigarettes, so they should never switch back to tobacco cigarettes.”
The study was conducted between March and June 2011, 20 under the following guidelines:
Healthy adult daily smokers were provided with electronic cigarettes and 20 tobacco-flavored cartridges. Participants in the study had smoked traditional cigarettes for an average of 12 years, and 95% of them said they planned to quit smoking. All participants were asked to substitute their usual tobacco cigarettes with e-cigarettes for two weeks.
The international scientific team measured participants’ urine levels of seven nicotine metabolites and 17 biomarkers of exposure to carcinogens and toxicants present in cigarette smoke over a two-week period. The biomarkers measured in the study are indicators of the risk of several diseases, including lung cancer. For 12 of 17 measured biomarkers, they found significant declines in exposure to toxicants when participants changed from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes. The decline in toxicant levels was similar to the decline seen among tobacco users who quit smoking. Nicotine metabolites remained unchanged among the majority of study participants, confirming findings from earlier laboratory studies showing that e-cigarettes effectively deliver nicotine to the blood.
